Vocaroo Express – Send Voice Messages in Windows Mail

This is a small app for sending voice messages using your default email client (i.e. Outlook Express, Windows Mail, etc…). I guess it’s still in beta… but please give it a try!

Features:

  • Simple to use. Click to record, click to stop, and click to send!
  • Send voice messages as an attachment using your Windows email client.
  • Use the email software and address book you are are comfortable with.
  • All recordings are saved on disk for backup and later listening.
  • Help messages guide you each step of the way (all three of them!).
  • A rather fetching green and purple colour scheme.

It should work with any MAPI compatible email client and all versions of Windows. Some obvious “features” such as SMTP server support have been left out for the sake of simplicity (this app needs to be something your mother can use!). However you can always set your own SMTP server as an account in Outlook Express so that functionality is not really needed.

It does of course require you have a microphone.

  1. Well, I am not sure that $20 would be worth it for me. The original Vocaroo is good enough. Why not just email someone the link to the file you created online? That is still free, right?

There are a few advantages with this:
    - Messages are sent in Outlook Express. You can use your address book as you would normally. People less experienced with computers may prefer this.
    - You receive any “Delivery Status Notification” errors generated by the sent email
(there are *many* times a user simply misspells an email address in the original Vocaroo and will have no way of knowing their message was not received)
    - There is no guarantee that Vocaroo will always be available (the server might go down, or even old messages may get deleted when there are too many). With Vocaroo Express, the message is sent as an attachment so will never get lost.

But yes, it is not a *huge* amount better than the Vocaroo website. But hopefully people who prefer to use Outlook for sending their emails will find Vocaroo Express more convenient.

As for money, you do realise that Vocaroo in its original form cannot remain free forever? Ad-supported models only work for huge companies such as Google. I have to find other ways of making it earn money. This is just one of them.

  3. Would it be possible to make vocaroo express compatible with thunderbird?

Hmm, it should work with Thunderbird. Is Thunderbird set as your default email client?
